With back to back promotions and titles, Geelong was expecting big things in the top division of the rest of the world this season. But a bad start has forced the club into some drastic changes with the manager turning to the trade market to bring the club out of early relegation form.
In a surprising move, the club traded three of its big stars for younger alternatives in a bid to improve its fortunes. Manager Del traded highly talented young midfielder Van der Burg (26yo, 6.5m) and one of the most expensive defenders in the game Donaghy (7.5m, 28yo) to rival Beijing in return for three talented youths that include a right back, a midfielder and a striker.
Geelong followed this up with another quick deal, sending experienced left back Litvinov to Houston in return for a younger version of the left back in Polegek.
Local media has assumed that the manager is trying to build a younger squad to be competitive for the future, realizing that these few quality players were not enough for a real push toward the upper half of the table. Instead, Geelong he’s hoping that you will develop over the next few seasons and provide the club with some stability in the top division. However, critics also don’t quite understand how trading the club’s best players will help it avoid relegation this season. Time will tell, but the pressure is now onto the manager to show that he knows what he’s doing and keep the club in RoW’s top division.
