Houston fans aren’t used to near misses and long periods without trophies. But the last eight seasons have only brought two regional cups.
The wait was finally broken as the Texan club finally lifted the Americas D1 title for S61. It was a tight race and Houston was statistically not the best club in the region, but the fans don’t care, a title is a title.
Importantly, Houston broke the run of its historic rival in the region, Brasilia. The Brazilian club won the league in both S59 and S60.
The title win was led by two key players. Star striker Mochtar bagged 27 league goals in 26 games (top scorer in the region), while at the other end goalkeeper Montaya only conceded 16 goals all season, with an 82% save percentage.
Also key were three mid-season trades when Houston was trailing in fourth in the league. The club brought in three veteran midfielders to shore up a young midfield — Manassis from Addis Adana, Plume from Utrecht and Vitale from Sofia. The solid challenge winners were crucial in giving Houston a possession edge over rivals.
What’s next? The primary focus is on retaining the league title. Houston wants to cement its league dominance over the next few seasons.
