The season has kicked off! While managers tear their hair out and moan about losing FA bids and horrible match recaps, we’ll move on to the summaries of the opening week in the Wes world.
- A few scandals erupted as teams were auto-signed extra players. Naples mistimed their squad admin and were forced to take on an additional 17th player to make up the required numbers. Santiago were also signed multiple players in a clerical error. The issues were ultimately resolved after a commission hearing.
- It’s raining FAs! Despite predictions of a less than stellar flow of free agents, the Wes world welcomed a golden crop. Multiple players over 5m debuted, with some of the highlights including a 5-finish striker and a 6m midfielder. Singapore and Johannesburg were among the lucky winners.
- The opening round of the Wes Cup offered a few shocks. Most notably, last year’s two finalists both lost their opening match. Liverpool lost 1-2 to a rebuilding Bern in what was a particularly unfortunate recap, while Beijing lost to Poznan in a more equal game, 0-2. Both now can’t afford another loss if they are to progress.
- An unusually low number of trades occurred this off season. Only four in total. This suggests managers are waiting on free agents rather than trading in some of their top talent. But we may have more as teams underperform and managers look to retool their teams mid-season.
