Sheffield's Region Cup Final Curse Finally Slayed

Sheffield's 69-season wait for a major trophy finally ended as the Skulls defeated Derby, 2-0, Friday morning to capture the Europe North Cup. Gian Nicola Trotta scored both Sheffield goals in the opening 15 minutes, then the Skulls dominated play for the rest of the way to secure the victory.

The Cup is a long time coming for Sheffield, which had reached the EN Cup Final 4 times since their current manager took over, only to be felled on every occasion. Liverpool thwarted Sheffield not once but twice, in Seasons 42 & 62. Rotterdam turned back the Skulls, 2-0, in Season 53. Just 2 seasons ago, Sheffield fell in a memorable Cup final replay to Espoo, 4-3. despite holding 1-0 and 2-1 leads.

While the league season has been a challenge - draws have ruled as Sheffield currently sit 8th in Division 1, just 1 point clear of the relegation zone - Sheffield has been strong on multiple fronts, winning the EN Cup and advancing to the WES Cup quarterfinals before being obliterated by Birmingham.

But Sheffield was truly dominant in the EN Cup, winning all 5 of its matches by a combined score of 15-2. Trotta scored 5 goals in the Cup to lead Sheffield's attack. The manager feels a great relief to get this monkey off his back and now embrace new goals to conquer.

Of the Cup win and completing his 30th season at the helm in this his second WES go-around, the WES 1.0 veteran manager said, "I'm getting old, man. We've always taken the EN Cup seriously, and coming so close so many times led to some bitter defeats. We have some veterans in this side who had experienced 2 Cup losses, so I'm happy for them to break through. It's been a long wait for our fans and I'm thrilled for them."
